I visited two large pyramids of Giza and one small one, but I want to say that this pyramid, thanks to its easy descent and perfectly preserved hieroglyphs on the walls, won my heart! It is really worth and deserves a visit, unlike many other pyramids, which are monotonous in their content.

Historical background The Pyramid of Unas is not the largest or most impressive from an architectural point of view, but it is undoubtedly one of the most important and iconic in the history of Egyptology. Its significance lies not in its size, but in its content.: It is the first pyramid inside which Pyramid Texts have been discovered — the oldest religious texts in the world. --- 1. Main Features · Customer: Pharaoh Unis (Greek Unas), the last pharaoh of the V dynasty (c. 2353-2323 BC). · Date of construction: ~ 2353-2323 BC . · Original height: ≈ 43 meters. · Current height: ≈ 19 meters (heavily destroyed, now a pile of rubble). · Base side length: 57 57.7 meters. · Feature: The first pyramid with Pyramid Texts. --- 2. Historical context and significance The pyramid of Unas was built at the end of the era of the Ancient Kingdom, when the power of the pharaohs began to weaken, and the size of their pyramids became significantly smaller than that of the rulers of the IV dynasty (Cheops, Chephren, Mykerinus). · Cultural shift: An important change in religious practice takes place during this period. Previously, rituals and spells that ensure the afterlife of the pharaoh were a secret known only to a few, but now they began to be recorded right inside the tomb to guarantee the eternal life of the king. · Purpose: Like the previous pyramids, it served as the tomb of the Pharaoh. However, its main function was to ensure divine rebirth and a prosperous existence in the afterlife with the help of magical texts. --- 3. "Pyramid Texts" — the main treasure of the pyramid In 1880, French Egyptologist Gaston Maspero discovered inside the pyramid of Unas many hieroglyphic inscriptions covering the walls of the burial chamber. · Content: This is a collection of spells, hymns, prayers and magic formulas. Their goal is to protect the Pharaoh's spirit in the afterlife, help him overcome dangers and merge with the gods (in particular, with Osiris and the sun god Ra). · Topics: The texts describe the Pharaoh's journey through the firmament, his resurrection, receiving food and offerings, and his transformation into a divine being (ah). · Legacy: The tradition of covering the walls of burial chambers with Pyramid Texts was continued in the pyramids of the pharaohs of the VI dynasty (Teti, Pepi I, Merenra I, Pepi II) and their queens. These texts are a direct precursor to the later "Sarcophagus Texts" and the "Book of the Dead." --- 4. Architecture of the complex Despite the modest size of the pyramid itself, its funeral complex has preserved important details. 1. Pyramid: It has a standard internal structure for that time with a descending corridor leading to the burial chamber. 2. Burial chamber: The walls of the alabaster chamber were covered with blue-green hieroglyphs (traces of paint are still visible), which created the illusion of being in a sacred, eternal space. There was a sarcophagus made of black basalt. 3. Cult road (ramp): The road leading from the Lower Temple to the Upper One was one of the longest and most decorated in the Ancient Kingdom. Its walls were covered with top-quality reliefs depicting scenes from Egyptian life: markets, ships, crafts, hunting, and ritual scenes. 4. Nizhny (dolinny) temple: Where the cult road started from. Today it is almost completely destroyed. --- 5. Archaeological discoveries · Discoverer: Gaston Maspero, who was the first to enter the pyramid in 1881 and copied the texts. · The state of the mummy: As in most pyramids, the mummy of Pharaoh Unas has not been found. Only fragments of his mummified body (arm and skull) found in the sarcophagus have been preserved. The analysis showed that Unis died in old age. · "Cannibal Hymn": One of the most famous and controversial texts in the pyramid of Unas is the so—called "Cannibal Hymn" (Spell 273-274). It describes how the Pharaoh, in order to gain the power of the gods, grabs them, kills them, cooks and eats them. This text should be understood not literally, but as a metaphor for the absorption of divine power and energy. --- 6. Significance and legacy The Pyramid of Unas has invaluable historical and religious significance.: · The oldest religious literature: "Pyramid Texts" is the oldest major religious work in the history of mankind, allowing a deep understanding of the worldview and beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. · The key to the Afterlife beliefs: They provide invaluable information about the development of Egyptian religion, the concept of paradise, the afterlife, and the deification of the Pharaoh. · Cultural Bridge: The Pyramid of Unas symbolizes the transition from the era of the giant pyramids, which represented unlimited power, to an era when the emphasis shifted to the inner, spiritual content of the tomb. · The beginning of the tradition: She laid the foundation for a tradition that will live on throughout the history of ancient Egypt, evolving into new forms of funeral texts. Thus, the pyramid of Unas is a modest monument on the outside, but incredibly rich inside, which revealed to scientists the hidden world of ancient Egyptian religion and magic.

Definitely worth a visit! The interior is more beautiful than in the most famous pyramids. And the entrance inside is free (the fee for visiting the territory only is 600 Egyptian pounds)
